Why does wisdom tooth hurt?

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Wisdom teeth (third molars) often cause pain due to multiple issues:

1. Impaction

  • They don’t have enough space to emerge properly, getting trapped in the jawbone or gums, causing pressure and inflammation.

2. Partial Eruption

  • Partially erupted wisdom teeth create a flap of gum tissue where food and bacteria collect, leading to infection (pericoronitis).

3. Infection or Decay

  • Hard-to-clean wisdom teeth are prone to cavities, gum disease, or bacterial infections, triggering pain and swelling.

4. Crowding

  • Emerging wisdom teeth can push against neighboring teeth, causing misalignment and discomfort.

5. Cysts/Tumors

  • Rarely, impacted wisdom teeth may develop cysts or tumors around them, damaging the jawbone or nerves.
